The Nature-Nurture theories are two contrasting views that offered to explain how human acquired language in the history of language acquisition. The naturist state that language acquisition is biologically determined while nurture proponent states that language acquisition is shaped by experience. Immanuel Kant, the naturist stated that knowledge can’t come from experience alone, there is pre-existing structure to organize and interpret the experience; therefore, human have the innate ability to acquire language. On the other hand, John Locke proposed tabula rasa that human are not born with innate ideas and knowledge was sprung from sensation, which proceeds to reflection. For example, children learn the concept of “cat” when their mother points to a physical dog and says “that’s a cat”.  The sensation of seeing a cat is directly stored in the brain as the "cat concept".

The main proponent of the naturist t is Noam Chomsky. He argues that human brains have a language acquisition device (LAD), an innate mechanism or process that allows children to develop language skills. He also proposed an argument - the poverty of the stimulus (POTS) claims that a child may acquire a language even though the data itself is too poor to determine the language; for example, children are able to acquire language from pidgin and convert it into a more grammatical complex Creole. In addition, children are able to learn any kind of language when they are born and the stages of language development occur at about the same age in most children, regardless of their cultures and environment stimuli. Most recent evidences came from the study of chimpanzees which indicated that they have the ability to communicate by use signal to refer and symbols to represent but they do not have language because they lack the ability to form syntax, phonology, morphology and discourse as human does.

My professor revealed her secret of how to get into a research project as an undergraduate student ---- Watch the discovery
channel !

She saw a poster in school saying that research assistance needed and course credits granted so she decided to give a try. She went to the professor's office and the professor just pulled her in to the room with a chimpanzee. She said that gladly she saw the discovery channel so she was able passed this "surprising interview". She said that she didn't know much about the chimpanzee but  by watching the discovery channel , she knew that chimpanzee was an dangerous and violent animal and when she saw the chimpanzee in the room, she knew that this chimpanzee was in the attacking status so she immediately hold herself in the corner of the room for protecting herself.  And surprising, she did the right thing, the chimpanzee stop being angry and came to comb her hair then she heard a person from the top of room said : you're in the project !

I did fellow the schedule but there are still lots of stuff to do. The only thing I'm worrying about  right now is my group presentation. I HATE presentation and all my group members are "English speakers" which made me in a disadvantaged position. And our in class presentation is due next week even though the professor said that she is not going to mark it, none of use believe it. And yet, we also have 3 days in school presentation which is crazy. I think the whole purpose of this class is to hold a international health week in school because there is No tests in this class ! All we need to do is to write a research paper and get the group project done. It is easy to screw-up this course.

I got 3 papers to go within a month plus 1 journal packages . That journal package is chaos, because we have to literaly make a "creative research book". Thanks Youtube that I found a video on the recentlly banned Birth control pill -Yaz  maybe I can do an entry about this issue. In addition, I got 3 midterms.... but I think I can manage it well.

I watched this movie in class and I was surprised by the health care system in the US and I was shocked by those facts because it happened in the US which is not an undeveloped country.
This video is included in the exam so I just make a note here. Too bad that the class was "too short" and didn't get a chance to finished it.The focus from the Prof: “Determine Michael Moore's argument for the US health system in this film and find a piece of evidence of his argument."

I was shocked by the facts that many US citizens are unable to get the health insurance because the policies from the insurance companies. And even some of them are fully covered, the companies still managed to get some excused to not to pay for their coverage. Therefore, some people lost their chances to fight with their illness. There are couple examples in this movie, and I was mad about those insurances comapny  who gave lame excuses for not paying those coverage.

Michael Moore support Public health system, he gave a lot of examples of the benefit of the public founded health systems in Canada , French, and British. One of the example said that an US citizen managed to Canada for seeking medical help. The 22 years old US girl got a cancer but the insurance company refused to cover her medical fee because "she is too young to get this kind of cancer”  Then she managed to get a fake marriage with her Canadian friend to get the public health insurance in Canada and now she is cancer-free. They joked that an American married a Canadian just for the medical insurance.

I'm pretty enjoying this week. The school is okay; I basically follow the schedule and didn't fall behind. I got more readings and assignments this term but gladly I am 100% full time so it shouldn't be a problem. I have to catch up for health studies; the last time I took health course was a year ago. And I hope I can do well on the political science course, although I'm totally new to this area.

It is funny that people can always recognize me even though we're not familiar to each other. I met my former-health study partner, he recognized me first but I couldn’t recognize him after he called my name. Therefore, I think I showed him a “Who are you” face. And we got no conversation while we walked through the hallway, so I asked him if he is taking any health course this term, and he said that "that was the only one I have"….
We were actually in the same class!! I felt so embarrassed, I shouldn't tried to start a conversation with him...lol

I visited this place when I was a kid but I didn’t have a strong memory about it, I just remember someone took a picture of me standing outside of the museum. I just know that the museum is called " National Palace Museum " in English this time I visited it. I told my CBC cousin that we’re going to the " National Treasure Museum ” because it is where the old Chinese treasure been stored. It seems like a big joke but my saying did make sense, didn’t it?

We went to the museum in the afternoon but it closed at 5pm so we only spent approx. two hours there. It was kind of rush but the overall experience was great. I did saw the famous jadeite cabbage and the meat-shaped stone. I like the meat-shaped stone better because I think the jadeite cabbage was too thin and seems like a malnutrition cabbage. On the other hand, the meat-shaped stone looked more real compared to the cabbage. I also like the exhibition of "Toward Modernity" for the late Ch'ing Dynasty, especially of the stuff that was impacted by the foreigner. I also see many foreigner visitors and most of them were Koreans. The museum provided versions of the handouts for the visitors, the Chinese, English and Japanese versions. However, I think they should give out the Korean versions since there are more Korean visitors in Taiwan , I even saw Koreans in the Costco. In addition, the Koreans will have more understand of the Chinese Culture and won’t say that the Chinese stuff was invented by them. It was a great experience to visit the best museum in Taiwan . I hope I can re-visit this place again and spend more time here.

I got a chance to attend this special exhibition when I was in Taipei . The exhibition is hold in the National Museum of History. I waited for a long time to get into the place because there was a long line-up. However, I still waited patiently because I know it is a good chance to visit all those amazing masterpieces.

I had a family reunion in Taipei . We had our first dinner in the Sunworld Dynasty Hotel(王朝大酒店) and this hotel is the host for the William Jones Cup International Basketball Tournament ; However, the training of their staffs was under the standard, and I think it is even worse than the snack bar or fast-food restaurant.

We had buffet in Le Parc Café, which is located in the 1st floor. I don't want to make any comment on their food but their attitudes towards the costumers were really bad. A waitress spills the soy sauce and wasabi while cleaning up my cousin's empty dish. The soy sauce was all over her hair and back of the T-shirt which is pretty gross and it did make her smell like a raw fish. When we asked them to bring us the towel, they said that they don't have any towel! It doesn't make any sense because a hotel should always have towers. They finally bring us some tissue papers after we complaining about it. After I took my cousin to the washroom for cleaning-up, they decided to give us a "temporary T-shirt" and bring that dirty and nasty shirt to the washing machine and promised that they will dry it up.

After at least an hour of dining, we still didn't get the T-shirt so we keep asking them about it. They finally give us that shirt after another 30 mines or so, but the shirt was still Wet!! But my cousin jus wants her t-shirts back, so she didn't care about it (the T-shirt that they gave her was too small ) When we just enter the entrance of the restaurant after changing in the washroom, the waitress asked me to give them the T-shirt back immediately. I was so mad about it, and I complained to them again, but the manager just keep saying sorry and asked if she needs the T- shirt to be dry again. I wouldn't go to that hotel again because they were just being nice to the foreigner basketball players but didn't care about the citizen here in Taiwan . Nevertheless, I’m still thankful to my uncle and aunt who treated us the meal. We actually had a great time except that accident.

I went to 7-11 to buy lunch today and was surprised by their new service. The counter girl asks me if I want to microwave the bento while I paid at for my lunch. I said sure and she took out a blue sheet before she put my bento to the microwave. I thought that was a paper tower which can reduce the heat when I took the heated bento home. (The shops do not provide the plastic shopping bag to the customers anymore unless you pay for it and I didn't bring one because the store was very close to my home) After my bento was heated, she put a paper tower above my cold noodles to prevent it being heated by the hot bento then she packed everything on that blue sheet. Then she pull the side of the sheet up, the blue sheet became a bag. What a wonderful invention and great service! The the bag is cute and environmental friendly. However, I don't like the food. There were few choices when I got there and the sauce of my cold noodles was worse than what I can make.  However, I still love their triangular rice balls. It is nice to have 7-11 around.

The blue sheet was the size of my laptop.

Thanks for sharing all those Spanish songs with me :)

I just finished up re-organize the music in my computer a while ago but now I got more songs to be organized. I'm always the "music craver".

Now I got songs from many languages, including: Mandarin, Cantonese, English, Japanese, Korean, French, Spanish, German...even though I only understand the first 3 languages and a bit of French.

        from UTSC website.

People often think that the main campus of a University is better than any other campuses because the main campuses often have more resources and it is usually the biggest campus. From this stereotyping, people often have better impression on the St. George Campus of the University of Toronto because it is the main campus and it is located in the downtown Toronto. On the other hand, the Scarborough campus which located in the uptown seems not as good as the St. George Campus; however, the Scarborough Campus has its own distinguished feature.

Start from here, I will begin to write some stuff in my second language just as I wrote some childish stuff in French. I don't think I have the good ability to write in English even though my English typing skill is way better than Chinese typing skill. However, practice makes perfect, let's start from here.
It is time to get away from the formal school essay writing style and do some daily blabber English writing. I hate writing essays, especially those research essays. But I think I will love to write some "light essays" here. Let's start from here.
Nevertheless, I will keep the essay clean and readable. I will not use the "MSN-style English" when I 'm writing here and I will eliminate the "lol" and all those abbreviations. After all, the purpose for writing in English here is to improve my writing skills.
Let's start from here, try to think more in English than Chinese, use more foreign languages than my mother tongue. But it doesn't mean that I want to be/I am white-washed, I am still Chinese form head to toe. I just want to improve my language skills. I really think writing the blog can improve the writing skill and I will keep my writing habit.

Toronto is not my real hometown, but it is where I spent my teenage life, the second critical period (1) of my life. I left my hometown, Taiwan when I was fifteen years old and stay here thereafter until now. It has been seven years that I live in this beautiful city, how can't you love it? I love Toronto not only because I spent seven years out of my entire life here, but because it is the place that make my life different. It is a place that opens my eyes towards the world. I love Toronto, not because of the CN tower, the food or the environment; I love Toronto all because of those beautiful life experiences that I learned from it.

During the time in Toronto, I gained the ability to survive in the snow. I was looking forward to the snow when I first came here but after the first snow in my life, winter in Toronto has became the most terrible nightmare. However, the humans are the most amazing creature and they can adapt to different environment easily. So after the few years of "snow training", I'm as strong as the polar bear. Nevertheless, I'm still disagrees the saying of "walking in the snow is very romantic." Life in Toronto makes me physically strong by forcing me to tolerant the -20 C weather.
