CIC Canada
Highlights of the New Program
- extension of the work permit length from 1 or 2 years to THREE years
- removal of the requirement that the job be related to the student's degree
- removal of the requirement that the student must first have a job offer
- removal of the requirement that the work permit be "employer specific"
(i.e. post-graduation work permits will now be "open" work permits).
These changes are effective immediately.
Eligibility
International students who:
- have studied full-time for a minimum of 8 months in their academic program; and
- have completed degree requirements and received notification that they are eligible to obtain their degree; and
- apply within 90 days of completing the requirements of their degree; and
- have a valid Study Permit when they apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit
International students are not eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit program if:
- they are recipients of Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship, Government of Canada Scholarship and/or CIDA funding
- participating in a distance learning program
This is a significant immigration policy change affecting international students and will enchance Canada's reputation as an education destination.
The International Student Centre will help to facilitate Post-Graduation Work Permit applications in coming weeks. The Career Centre will also
work with these recent international graduates who are seeking assistance in their job search.
